Membrane Lab Report Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Membrane - Lab Report ExampleIn fauna cells, when the solute concentration is equal on both sides of the membrane, there will be no movement of piddle molecules. Solutions with this property are said to be isotonic. hypertonic resolvings have higher solute concentrations. When an savage cell is placed in this solution the urine molecules will move out of the cell, ca utilise it to shrink. On the other hand, placing an animal cell in hypotonic solutions will cause water molecules to move into the cell, causing it to swell. This is because hypotonic solutions have lower solute concentrations (Freeman, 2010). This forms the basis for the hypothesis of the study the weights of the dialysis tubings with unlike solute concentrations will change, showing that osmosis is dependent on the concentration of the solute. Method Six dialysis tubings were soaked for five minutes in a beaker containing 400 ml of water to soften them. One end of every tubing was tightly tied using floss. Two of the tubings were then each filled with 10 ml of water through the untied end. These were taken to be the control tubings. Two other tubings were each filled with 10 ml of 15% sucrose solution and twain other with 10 ml of 45% sucrose solution in the same way as the control tubing. The untied ends on the tubings were tied using floss and then appropriately labeled. The weight of each tubing was measured and recorded. 150 ml of water was put in half a dozen separate beakers. The six tubings were then placed separately in the six beakers at the same time. After ten minutes, the dialysis tubings were removed from the beakers and their weights measured and recorded. They were then placed in the beakers again. This metre was repeated three more times. Results The weights recorded during the experiment indicated that the weights of the dialysis tubings with sucrose solutions increased as the experiment progressed as shown in the table below. The table also shows that the fair weight of the control tubings changed by a small fraction. Time (minutes) Average weight of water control tubings (grams) Average weight of tubings with 15% sucrose solution (grams) Average weight of tubings with 45% sucrose solution (grams) 0 10.8195 11.8140 13.3010 10 10.5075 12.1435 14.7325 20 10.4570 12.7600 16.4625 30 10.4345 13.3010 17.8905 40 10.3305 13.6795 19.2070 turn off 1 Table showing the fair weights of the tubings after ten-minute interval The percentage changes in weights of the tubings as their weights increased or reduced are shown below. The results show that the tubings with 45% sucrose gained the most weight patch the control tubings reduced in weight. Time (minutes) % change in average weight of water control tubings % change in average weight of tubings with 15% sucrose solution % change in average weight of tubings with 45% sucrose solution 0 0.000 0.000 0.000 10 -2.884 2.789 16.762 20 -3.350 8.007 23.769 30 -3.558 12.587 34.505 40 -4.511 15.790 44.403 Table 2 Tabl e showing the percentage change in weight of the tubings after ten-minute intervals The data in the table was used to plot the graph below. It shows visually how the weight of the dialysis tubings changes over time. Figure 1 Graph showing changes in percentage weight changes of the tubings after ten-minute intervals. The x-axis represents the time in minutes and the y-axis represents the % weight change. interchange The experiment showed that as the concentration of sucrose increased, the mass of the dialysis tubings also increased. In the control tubing, the change in

Strategic management as science Case Study Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words
Strategic management as science - Case Study ExampleThe report highlights differentiation strategies through marketing, the role of internal championship culture, and a variety of systemologies which contribute to successful demarcation strategy. The evidence would seem to suggest that strategic management is more of a science than an fraud.Michael Porter, a illustrious strategic business expert, discusses his Five Forces model which recognises a variety of external forces which can significantly impact business direction. From a competitive viewpoint, this model suggests that the panic of substitute growths can impact gross sales and growth success (Quickmba.com, 2008). Substitute products represent similar product offerings in similar marketplaces which can detract from sales success simply due to these products creating excess competition in a firms market environment. Bean and Radford (2000) identify that product innovation, creating unique product offerings, is one metho d to overcome competition and will create a sense of differentiation in different consumer buyers. Innovation might be categorised as an art form, as this is often based on internal staff ingenuity, however innovation would seem to be more scientifically-founded as before an innovative product can be launched, examination of competing products and their function must occur. This requires abridgment of the external competitive environment which is grounded more in scientific research on behalf of a company. With the high level of competition in a wide variety of different product markets causing problems with being able to compete successfully, innovation as a strategic tool would seem to point toward business success. Porters model also identifies threats to businesses in terms of supplier power, such as the level of contain which suppliers have over raw material delivery or the development of a low-cost distribution infrastructure. Cohen and Roussel (2005) offer that a successful strategic business practice involves designing a supply-chain metric which measures the impact of supplier power on the ability to launch new and innovative products. The first proposed task is to great deal up a supply chain strategy objective which examines costs and the feasibility of distribution in a method which is both efficient and satisfies cypher restrictions. This again would point toward supply chain considerations as being more of a business science, as it involves face-to-face negotiations with different suppliers and a strategic analysis of the strengths and weaknesses along the existing supply chain network. The role of strategic management in regards to suppliers is to identify whether deficiencies exist in the supply chain and work consistently to improve efficiency and budget. In terms of supply, luck and opportunism would seem to be aspects of business strategy which are not relevant to creating a viable supply network. From a marketing viewpoint, Porters Five Forces model also recognises the threats stemming from different consumers in terms of their price flexibility (the

Environmental Sustainability Master - Essay ExampleThere be 76 data sets integrated to full assess the likelihood of a certain country to preserve effectively its environmental resources. These data sets include tracking natural resource endowments, past and map pollution levels, environmental management efforts, and its capacity to improve its environmental performance. The broad range of environmental issues beingness faced by each country go into five categories environmental systems, reducing environmental stresses, reducing human vulnerability to environmental stresses, societal and institutional capacity to respond to environmental challenges, and global stewardship. disrespect of the continuous urbanization process in most countries, Ireland is maintaining its folksy character. An evident decline in the cracker-barrel race was observed in 1901 when the rural population fell from 72 to 43 percent. Surprisingly, the country experienced a boom in rural population growth in 1981 and 1996. This rural growth is characterized by isolated houses in the countryside or cluster of houses outside towns and villages. The expected reason for such phenomena is the obvious importance of agriculture to the livelihood of the people. However, this is not the case. The observed rural settlement growth took place at a time of stagnating agricultural economy and a turn down in agricultural employment. Studies were able to shit that there is a strong relationship between changes in rural settlement and the trends in car ownership. There was a 140 percent improver in car ownership in Ireland between 1970 and 1994. Presently, the country is experiencing 5 percent annual growth in car ownership. Due to this, people are more capable to choose residence in one place and be employed in another they become the so called commuters. (McGrath) The growth of rural settlements and the increase in the working population whose residences are situated in a place far from work, give way to the issue of car dependency. The absolute majority of the rural population being car dependent contributes to certain environmental problems whose scopes are wider and whose effects transcends beyond the communities of the involved people. The issue of motor car dependency, therefore, is being linked as the main reason to more serious environmental issues. The motor car is tagged as environmentally unsustainable and less efficient manner of everyday transport. A car consumes twice much energy as a train and five times greater than a bus. Aside from this, it is a main contributor to air pollution, a problem which is of great global concern nowadays. A motor cars carbon dioxide emission, measured as grams per passenger kilometer, is 50 percent higher than a train and four times higher when the bus is the mode of dose. The bottom line, Ireland, its people being dependent on mystical cars for personal travels is relatively unsustainable on transport related environmental grou nds because of the per capita levels of energy consumptions and vehicle emissions (McGrath). Such is the main findings of the Dublin study. Luckily, the current state of our scholarship and Technology is far advanced from what we can and what we have in the past. Right now, innovations and discoveries are becoming a usual part in this fast-pace world. Irelands mode of transportation has a lot of potential of being modified and improved so as to avoid the further risk of subjecting

Size and Complexity of an Animal Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Size and Complexity of an Animal - Essay ExampleThe essay Size and Complexity of an Animal talks about the heavy aspect of animal growth and the relationship between the growth in size and the surface area relative to its lot.The relationship between surface areas to volume ratio is best exemplified by reflection on phylum Porifera. The organism has a littler surface area in relation to its volume. As a result, it depicts a simple form of exchange with the external environment. For example, nutrients are taken directly from water then enters through pores by cells lining the organism. On the opposite hand, involved organisms have a larger surface area to volume. As a result, these animals have trouble in acquiring nutrients. Therefore, they have developed a hard mechanism of feeding such as mesoderm in platyhelminths. The development of larger and complex bodies posed a challenge in respiration. The reason is that smaller animals such as sponges could take gasses directly from th e surrounding water. As a result, there was no need for a development of the specialized organ. The challenge arises, as organism could not exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide directly with their cells. Moreover, in platyhelminths, the development of straight body enhanced efficient exchange of gasses through diffusion. The flat body help in providing a high surface area to volume ratio and hence easy supply and exchange of gasses. On the other hand, higher animals could not maintain gas exchange through their body surface. As a result, diffusion was not possible on their body surfaces.
